An historical-theoretical view is presented first. The article serves to emphasize the complex and illusive nature of moral growth in children and similarly stresses the need for multiple research modes in order to gain insight into this intricate facet of child development.     CHOICE STATUS AND MORAL JUDGMENT IN NIGERIAN SCHOOLGIRLS.

He suggested that as the solidarity between children grows, the notion of justice starts gradually to emerge. Several researchers tested Piaget's idea empirically, but reported contradictory results. Kohlberg, for example, reported a negative correlation between choice status and moral reasoning; he found the level of moral reasoning of isolates significantly higher than that of those with higher choice status. Since most of the studies were conducted in Western cultures, the present study examines the relationship between choice status and level of moral judgment with the Ss brought up in a society with values perhaps different from the Ss examined by Kohlberg and the rest.     The relation of moral orientation and moral judgment of prosocial and antisocial behaviour of Chinese adolescents.

International Journal of Psychology, Apr2003, Vol. 38 Issue 2, p101, 11p, 3 charts Abstract: The present study investigated the relation of moral orientation and moral judgment to prosocial and antisocial behaviour from a first-person perspective. The major findings support the following four hypotheses. (1 a) The moral orientation of girls is higher than that of boys, and (lb) boys are more delinquent than girls; (2) the moral orientation of prosocial adolescents is higher than that of delinquent adolescents; (3) the moral judgment of prosocial adolescents is higher than that of delinquent adolescents; and (4) the moral development of prosocial adolescents is higher than that of delinquent adolescents. Few researchers have attempted to investigate how moral orientation and moral judgment relate to prosocial and antisocial behaviour in a single study. The present study fills this research gap. Moreover, the study of moral judgment from a first-person perspective appears to be a meaningful and useful approach. Future studies should be conducted to investigate whether moral judgment from a first-person perspective is more predictive of moral behaviour than moral judgment from a third-person perspective. It would also be meaningful to conduct a cross-cultural study to investigate the relation of moral orientation and moral judgment to prosocial and antisocial behaviour in different cultures. The use of a self-report method in a study of prosocial and antisocial behaviour has certain limitations; for example, respondents may not give honest responses.     Resistance and Subversion in Everyday Life.

Journal of Moral Education, Jun2003, Vol. 32 Issue 2, p115, 16p Abstract: The main thesis of this article is that resistance and subversion are part of everyday life in most cultures, and that they are integral to the process of development. Many of our theories of social and moral development either fail to account for resistance, and treat it largely as anti-social, or view it as unusual activity sometimes undertaken by those who have reached a high level of development. Several examples are presented to illustrate that resistance and subversion are common among people in positions of little power in the social hierarchy-especially on the part of women in patriarchal societies. Moreover, research has demonstrated that social conflict and resistance based on moral aims occur in childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Especially among adults, conflicts occur over inequalities embedded in the structure of social systems that allow greater power and personal entitlements to some groups (e. g. social hierarchies based on gender, socio-economic class, ethnic or racial status). In their everyday lives adults come into conflicts with others and resist moral wrongs embedded in cultural practices that serve to further the interests of those in higher positions in the social hierarchy. Resistance frequently entails deceptive actions aimed at transforming aspects of the social system judged unfair and detrimental to the welfare of groups of people.     CULTURAL INFLUENCES ON TRANSITION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MORAL REASONING IN NIGERIAN BOYS.

Journal of Social Psychology, Aug79, Vol. 108 Issue 2, p151, 9p Abstract: In order to test Kohlberg's finding of the universal invariant sequential nature of his six stages of moral development in a cross-cultural context, eight Kohlberg-type moral dilemmas were used for pretesting 210 Hausa Muslim secondary school boys aged 12-14 years. The 193 Ss whose moral reasoning was found at Stages 1, 2, 3, and 4 were assigned to various experimental and control groups at each stage level. Experimental Ss were exposed to different pieces of advice, representing moral reasoning of one (+1) and two (+2) stages above their initial stages. Thirty days after experimental treatment, both experimental and control Ss were post-tested on all eight dilemmas. The shifts of experimental groups were compared with those of control groups. Data were not strictly in accord with Kohlberg's hypothesis that his stages of moral development are of invariant sequential nature in all cultures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] (AN 5389605)
