AN EMPIRICAL EVALUATION OF THE VALIDITY OF THE DRAW-A-FAMILY TEST.

The DAF is one of the many derivatives of the better-known as Draw-A-Person Test (DAP). The literature on the DAF is primarily of a clinical nature and contains little information on construct validity. The more experimentally based research on the DAF is limited and inconclusive as to the utility of various objective indices. The validity of the DAF has not been established adequately. Several hypotheses were formulated, based on the interrelation of demographic characteristics with clinical interpretations of the DAF. Some support for the validity of interpretations of the DAF was found. (AN 15844835)

Draw-A-Family protocols were collected from 61 boys from homes in which the father was present and from 58 boys from father-absent homes. It informs that it was necessary to secure small numbers of boys from various places, but in doing so an attempt was made to balance each subsample of fatherless boys with a similar sample of boys from the same place who had fathers. Seven frequently used indicators of attention devoted to the portrayal of a figure, e.g., size, spontaneous drawing, amount of detail, failed to distinguish the father drawings of father-absent from father-present boys. Journal of Personality Assessment, Aug75, Vol. 39 Issue 4, p389, 5p Abstract: Summary: On the basis of Kinetic Family Drawings, doctoral level, clinicians, predoctoral interns, and hospital secretaries judged 36 children to be normal or disturbed and indicated their degree of confidence in each rating. The groups were not found to differ in overall diagnostic accuracy or in degree of confidence, but professional training level did appear related to the ability to better a chance level of performance. The Collaborative Drawing Technique.

With this expanded focus, innovations in projective testing are desired to provide information that is meaningful for the treatment process. The Collaborative Drawing Technique represents an effort to meet this need through a projective device which yields information about the functioning of the individual within the context of his family. The CDT was designed to be easily and quickly administered with a minimum of required materials and still give information which can guide the treatment process. To date, the technique has been used primarily as a part of an initial diagnostic interview with families presenting for therapeutic treatment. Psychology in the Schools, Mar2007, Vol. 44 Issue 3, p257-270, 14p Abstract: Research, commentary, and interpretive procedures reflecting varied perspectives on figure drawings are presented in order to suggest contemporary practice models for school psychologists. The review of the extensive literature includes measures with scoring systems that are normed and those systems that rely on clinical traditions for interpretation. Available scoring systems demonstrate adequate reliability and validity for screening purposes, but evidence of their utility for diagnosis of an individual by interpretation of drawings is nonexistent. Drawing data can be useful when they are aggregated with other data and interpreted in a configural manner to obtain a description of the individual, or when the focus of assessment is on overarching constructs such as well-being. Finally, figure drawings may aid in establishing rapport with youth and provide a springboard for practitioner hypotheses, guiding the course of the assessment. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
